Funem Ipsum

Being a Happiness Engineer means testing stuff all the time. New WordPress.com features, things that someone’s having trouble with on their site that I need to recreate so I can walk them through it, possible bugs – there’s a lot of testing.

Much of that testing involves creating a dummy post or page on a test site that requires filler content.

The most popular form of filler content is obviously Lorem Ipsum. It’s a classic. But it does get a little dull.

A while back, my friend Alex sent me a link to his favorite filler text generator – a Star Trek themed lorem ipsum. Much more entertaining than the regular old stuff.

Since then I’ve been poking around the web, looking for other fun generators. There are some pretty good ones out there! Here are the best I’ve found so far.

Star Trek Ipsum

This is the one that started this whole mess for me, so it only makes sense to list it first:

These are the voyages of the Starship Enterprise. Its continuing mission, to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no one has gone before. We need to neutralize the homing signal. Each unit has total environmental control, gravity, temperature, atmosphere, light, in a protective field. Sensors show energy readings in your area. We had a forced chamber explosion in the resonator coil. Field strength has increased by 3,000 percent.

Resistance is futile.

Complete with options for an HTML paragraph tag, a ‘These are the voyages…’ intro and a Borg closing (both included above), this one is a pretty good filler content generator.

Good call, Alex. Good call.

Star Wars Ipsum

Continuing in the sci-fi genre…

Naboo darth darth mothma darth watto. Darth ackbar alderaan ewok. Solo jawa sebulba moff leia. Skywalker hutt kenobi lando binks. Fett k-3po yavin dooku. Darth fett leia solo. Mon padmé antilles cade darth endor. Tusken raider solo darth vader moff gonk kashyyyk. Obi-wan fett calrissian antilles k-3po sidious skywalker r2-d2 palpatine. Mara calamari amidala lars skywalker wicket. Antilles mothma padmé hutt antilles. Anakin solo jar darth chewbacca moff mandalorians mon windu. Windu wedge skywalker gamorrean padmé jade twi’lek hutt.

I like the idea behind this one, but they definitely lose points for design – dark text on a dark background is a little tricky to read. Still works though!

Settings on this one include ‘Padawan’ and ‘Jedi Knight.’ I chose the latter (naturally) and didn’t have a clue what most of the words were, so the above snippet is ‘Padawan.’ You can also choose to start off with ‘Lucas ipsum dolor sit amet…’, but no ‘Long, long ago…’ – copyright issue, maybe?

Cheese Ipsum

Who doesn’t love cheese? I do.

I love cheese, especially cheese triangles gouda. Edam stinking bishop pepper jack when the cheese comes out everybody’s happy edam melted cheese st. agur blue cheese camembert de normandie. When the cheese comes out everybody’s happy the big cheese lancashire cheese on toast the big cheese cheese slices queso cheese slices. Monterey jack.

The ‘I love cheese’ option is a nice touch. So is the pun in the tagline on the site. I’ll let you check it out yourself. Not going to lie, I kind of love this one.

Beer Ipsum

Speaking of things I like…

Ordered by the pint, the orange-colored beer shimmers with deep red and brown hues, and is topped with a healthy lace. The nose offers a very soft, mixed bag of spices and faint notes of pumpkin meat beneath some maltiness. The aroma is delicate at first, opening up as the beer warms. Carbonation is tight on the palate, a bit sharp. More soft and powdery spices emerge, reminiscent of the holidays. The pumpkin is subtle, with hints of starch. There’s just enough malty sweetness as not to overwhelm the spicing or pumpkin, with an interesting bit of burnt sugar around the edges and, at times, suggestions of oranges. No real bitterness to speak of, but there’s a thin sourness that awakens the palate. Some huskiness as the beer warms, with a dry finish and faint spice linger. Overall, the beer is quite dry.

This ones actually a bit different. It’s a collection of existing paragraphs, rather than randomly generated text. Still fun for test content!

Zombie Ipsum

For the horror fans!

Zombie ipsum reversus ab viral inferno, nam rick grimes malum cerebro. De carne lumbering animata corpora quaeritis. Summus brains sit, morbo vel maleficia? De apocalypsi gorger omero undead survivor dictum mauris. Hi mindless mortuis soulless creaturas, imo evil stalking monstra adventus resi dentevil vultus comedat cerebella viventium. Zonbi tattered for solum oculi eorum defunctis go lum cerebro. Nescio brains an Undead zombies. Sicut malus putrid voodoo horror. Nigh tofth eliv ingdead.

Comes in three flavors: Regular, Lite, and 50% More Brains!

Mainer Ipsum

Growing up in New England, I love this. Even the site looks good (having an option for ‘fouah’ paragraphs is a nice touch). They even have a button you can use to submit your own Maine-isms.

Cat Ipsum

The internet has always loved cats, so this only makes sense.

Jump launch to pounce upon little yarn mouse, bare fangs at toy run hide in litter box until treats are fed groom yourself 4 hours – checked, have your beauty sleep 18 hours – checked, be fabulous for the rest of the day – checked! yet sit in box chase after silly colored fish toys around the house yet shake treat bag, so pelt around the house and up and down stairs chasing phantoms. Sleep nap stare at the wall, play with food and get confused by dust for attack feetspit up on light gray carpet instead of adjacent linoleum roll on the floor purring your whiskers offnap all day. Peer out window, chatter at birds, lure them to mouth. Use lap as chair eat grass, throw it back up inspect anything brought into the house the dog smells bad. Leave fur on owners clothes who’s the baby, and have secret plans but jump launch to pounce upon little yarn mouse, bare fangs at toy run hide in litter box until treats are fed.

Options for standard ipsum, cat breeds only, or standard scoops (above) along with titles and sub copy.

Pirate Ipsum

Starboard tackle wench smartly Buccaneer matey quarterdeck. Hempen halter tender booty pink case shot pirate run a rig. Matey splice the main brace topmast swab lookout killick spanker. Fathom Yellow Jack gangplank fire in the hole poop deck smartly lugger. Plunder quarter wherry American Main reef ye log.

This one is just amazing. First of all it’s fun to read. Second, the page itself is gorgeous. It also has the best options. You can set not only the total number of paragraphs, but also the words per sentence and the sentences per paragraph.

And they sell posters 🙂

Delorean Ipsum

Back To The Future fan? Me too. If you’ve watched those movies as many times as I have, most of this should sound familiar:

Scram, McFly. Tab? I can’t give you a tab unless you order something. Something wrong with the starter, so I hid it. Look, George, I’m telling you George, if you do not ask Lorraine to that dance, I’m gonna regret it for the rest of my life. Check out that four by four. That is hot. Someday, Jennifer, someday. Wouldn’t it be great to take that truck up to the lake. Throw a couple of sleeping bags in the back. Lie out under the stars.

Does your mom know about tomorrow night? Which one’s your pop? It’s my dad. Believe me, Marty, you’re better off not having to worry about all the aggravation and headaches of playing at that dance. Marty, you didn’t fall asleep, did you?

Yet. Um, yeah, I’m on my way. Mom, Dad. Good morning, Mom. C’mon, Mom, make it fast, I’ll miss my bus. Hey see you tonight, Pop. Woo, time to change that oil.

This one’s an open source jQuery plugin on Github. Available options include number of paragraphs, what type of HTML element each paragraph should be wrapped in, and what character from the film’s you’d like quotes from (the above sample is a mix of everyone).

HodorIpsum

A little fun for the Game of Thrones crowd:

Hodor. Hodor hodor… Hodor hodor hodor; hodor hodor; hodor hodor. Hodor. Hodor, hodor hodor HODOR hodor, hodor hodor? Hodor, hodor. Hodor. Hodor, hodor – hodor – HODOR hodor, hodor hodor, hodor, hodor hodor. Hodor hodor HODOR! Hodor hodor; hodor hodor – hodor?! Hodor hodor… Hodor hodor hodor; hodor hodor?

Hodor, hodor – hodor? Hodor hodor – hodor – hodor, hodor, hodor hodor. Hodor. Hodor hodor hodor hodor. Hodor, HODOR hodor, hodor hodor… Hodor hodor hodor. Hodor. Hodor hodor HODOR! Hodor hodor – hodor hodor, hodor, hodor hodor.

Hodor hodor – hodor… Hodor hodor hodor hodor hodor. Hodor. Hodor hodor – hodor – hodor… Hodor hodor hodor hodor. Hodor. Hodor hodor – hodor hodor hodor, hodor. Hodor hodor hodor hodor hodor! Hodor HODOR hodor, hodor hodor hodor; hodor hodor, hodor. Hodor hodor hodor! Hodor, hodor… Hodor hodor hodor?

Everything on the page, from the number of paragraphs you want, to the optional <p> tags, even the button to generate your ipsum remains true to the Hodor character.

And finally, we come to my personal favorite. The one I love the most, because it’s just so magical:

Harry Potter Ipsum

Thestral dirigible plums, Viktor Krum hexed memory charm Animagus Invisibility Cloak three-headed Dog. Half-Blood Prince Invisibility Cloak cauldron cakes, hiya Harry! Basilisk venom Umbridge swiveling blue eye Levicorpus, nitwit blubber oddment tweak. Chasers Winky quills The Boy Who Lived bat spleens cupboard under the stairs flying motorcycle. Sirius Black Holyhead Harpies, you’ve got dirt on your nose. Floating candles Sir Cadogan The Sight three hoops disciplinary hearing. Grindlewald pig’s tail Sorcerer’s Stone biting teacup. Side-along dragon-scale suits Filch 20 points, Mr. Potter.

Simple, clean interface with an option for the number of paragraphs, and a fun “Accio Filler Text” button to kick the whole thing off.

Where’s Waldo Ipsum

Lastly, we have one of my own creation. It’s not an actual generator (although that does sound like it would make a fun little project)

I like to use this for filler text I know I’ll ultimately be sharing with someone else. Sending a link to an example page with the title Where’s Waldo and a bunch of ‘W’ words is the kind of geeky thing I tend to enjoy.

Bonus points if you can find other Where’s Waldo characters like Wizard Whitebeard, Woof, Wenda, and Wilma. And ‘WordPress.’ I made sure that was in there too, obviously. Oh, and yes – using your browser’s search tool is definitely cheating.

All in all, these may not be the most productive tools in the world – but they make filler text a lot more entertaining to work with!

If you have any favorites that aren’t listed here, drop them in the comments.
